Modal Verbs - Les Verbes modaux

What is a modal verb? It is an auxiliary that modifies the meaning of the main verb! Here are the most common ones in English!

Qu'est-ce qu'un verbe modal ? C'est un auxiliaire qui modifie le sens du verbe principal ! Voici les plus courants en anglais !

Can: ability 

Ex. I can speak French.

Could: "can" in the past or conditional, polite requests

Ex. Could you help me, please?

May: permission 

Ex. May I go to the washroom?

Might: possibility 

Ex. It might rain today.

Will: future action

Ex. My dad will visit me next month.

*Shall: future intention 

Ex. I shall be there as planned.

*Ought to: moral duty or recommendation

Ex. Paul ought to eat less sugar.

Should: ought to!!!

Ex. You should listen to the teacher.

Would: conditional

Ex. I would buy this shirt, if I had the money.

Need to: necessity 

Ex. I need to wear glasses to see properly.

Used to: repeated action in the past

Ex. My mom used to work as a waitress.

Have to: forced circumstances 

Ex. I have to get up early to go to work.

Must: obligation

Ex. You must finish your homework.
